blog back up and running

I'm back up and running, sorry for the delays in reports.

We have been out seveal times sense my last fishing report, and I'm sorry to say I have lost my pic's of the last few weeks of charters due to PC crash.

The yellow and black fin bite is getting better everyday, with reports of Maui dolphin bite picking up as well. The hot bite right now is to the south of Hatteras about 40 mile run. The Rockhound will be heading down to these waters in hope of also picking up some sailfish in our spread.

We are sorry to say that we can't stay at our present charter pricing due to the high cost of fuel. At this time any bookings made will be locked in to our current prices. Starting May 1st we will need to add a fuel surcharge fee to our pricing. So, book your next charter now to cash in on the saving.

Another storm headed our way

Looks like this stormy weather will be with us til the middle of next week. When will it end, with April coming in this weekend all we can do is wait for good weather. The good news is the fish are here to fill the coolers. The yellow fin, wahoo and dolphin are here and the cobia are just to the south of Hatteras at this time. The RockHound has a few dates still open for April, so now's the time to book that Hatteras Fishing Charter.

No go this weekend

The weather was looking bad for Sunday the 6th, but Saturday the 5th looked doable. With reports of a bite of BFT in the 100 lb class, just 5 miles off Hatteras Light house on Friday in just 3o feet of water had made my decision to head out. We departed the dock at 6:15 am with 14 kt winds out of the southeast. Heading out the waves were 3 to 4 ft. The radio was starting to get busy with chatter of the fleet out ahead of us of  how the weather was changing fast. Reports of waves over 9 feet were building up out past the Shoals, and water temps only in the mid 40's in 50 fath. There were no signs of a bite inshore as of Fridays reports, so we started to head out.  The further we got out the bigger the waves got and the colder the temps. With safety first, Captain Pete made the right decision to turn back and head in. There are little big boats and big little boats as the fleet Captains on the radio were saying, meaning even the big boys over 50 foot were being tossed around today.

The Rockhound is booked for Sunday the 13th, and has openings for walk ons for Saturday the 12th.

Tuna blood on the deck

Arrived to our Hatteras dog house on Thursday the 24th, and got the RockHound ready for action for the weekend.

Saturday's Charter started out with the winds blowing and seas were rough heading out to the tuna grounds. Had Frank, AJ and our service boys on board today. After getting the spread out, our first bite came tight and Frank got the rod. After about a 5 min. fight we put some bait in the the box.

The next bite got AJ in the chair

After a 10 min. drag pulling battle, we lost the hookup. Up next in the chair was Henry, the fish hit hard and after a 5 min. fight we lost our 2nd hookup. The whole crew spent time in the chair today, but we never got tuna in the boat.

On Sunday had Phil and his crew on board the RockHound. Started trolling in the morning and all the marks on the fishfinder were deep. After about 2 hours of trolling the radio started to liven up of a bite south of us. We pulled in the spread and headed to the bite. On the way Captain Pete saw the gulf stream starting to rip and slowed down to take a look. He then yelled to drop the jigging rods down to 120 feet. within 1 min. we had 3 hookups, lost 2 but Ian's line started to peel line.

The time was 12:15 pm at this hookup, and we knew this was a big Bluefin on the line. After a 25 min. stand up fight, you can see Ian was working hard.

Now in the chair, Ian is 1 hour in to this fight, and holding on.

With the gulf stream ripping, we are now over 6 miles from where we had hooked up. Ian got the tuna to surface after 1 1/2 hours, and we got our first look at the bluefin.

Going in to 2 hours Ian is holding up well. As well as his gear, the Saltest spinning reel is at its limit and still holding on.

Its now 2 and a half hours and the bluefin is ready to give up, and surfaces behind the boat.

We are now over 16 miles from our hookup point, and Cory, the mate, gets the gaff hook in the tuna.

Ian can now relax after his 2 hours and 45 min. battle with a fish of a life time.

Heres Ian with his 66" Bluefin

At this time, the RockHound has 3 opens for Saturday March 5th. Call Captain Pete at 757-256-6305 for info.
